Everything You Need to Know About Wisconsin Lake Michigan Licenses

Navigating the licensing requirements for a day on Lake Michigan is straightforward, and having the right documentation ensures your trip with Livin’ the Dream Fishing Charters is both successful and stress-free. In Wisconsin, all anglers aged 16 and older are required to hold a valid fishing license and a specific Great Lakes Salmon and Trout stamp to fish the outlying waters of Lake Michigan. Whether you are a local resident or visiting from out of state, these contributions directly support the conservation and stocking programs that keep the Port Washington fishing grounds world-class.

Who Needs a License?

  • Adults (16+): Both residents and non-residents must have a valid license and the Great Lakes stamp.
  • Youth (Under 16): Children under the age of 16 do not need a fishing license and can fish for their own full bag limit.
  • Seniors: Wisconsin residents aged 65 and older qualify for a reduced-rate senior fishing license ($7.00). Non-resident seniors follow standard non-resident pricing.
  • Exemptions: Residents born before January 1, 1927, are exempt from needing a license. Active-duty military residents on furlough or leave may also fish without a license.

Where to Get Your License

Getting your paperwork in order is easy and can be done entirely online or in person near the Port Washington Marina.

  1. Online via Go Wild: Visit the Wisconsin DNR Go Wild website to purchase and print your license from home.
  2. Local Retailers: Several bait shops and sporting goods stores in the Port Washington area serve as authorized DNR agents.
  3. The 2-Day Charter Option: This is the most popular choice for our guests. The 2-Day Great Lakes License costs $14.00 for both residents and non-residents and conveniently includes the necessary salmon and trout stamp.
Important Proof of Purchase: For Lake Michigan fishing, the DNR requires a "Form of Proof." While digital copies on your phone are often accepted on land, we highly recommend carrying a printed hard copy while on the boat. This ensures that if a conservation officer requests to see your license, there is no risk of dropping your mobile device into the lake.
